Baseball

Baseball Is Derived from The Old Bat and Ball Games of the 1800s

Baseball is a bat and ball game played between two teams of nine players each. Each team takes a turn at batting and fielding. The team that is batting tries to score runs by the batter using the bat to attempt hitting a ball thrown by the pitcher. If the ball is hit, the batter then runs counter clockwise around a series of four bases, first base, second and third base, and home plate. A run is scored when the player can advance around all the bases, returning to home plate.

Players on the batting team take turns to hit the ball thrown by the pitcher of the fielding team. The fielding team will try to prevent the batting team get runs, but getting them out in several different ways. A player on the batting team who reaches a base, can then advance to the next base when his team mates are batting. The teams switch between batting and fielding whenever the fielding team records three outs. When each team has had a turn batting, beginning with the visiting team, that will constitute an innings. A game is composed of nine innings, and the team that has accumulated the biggest number of runs at the end of the game is the winner. The game of Baseball does not have to fit any time frame, but most games end at the ninth inning.

The World Series of Baseball

The overall champion of the major leagues is decided by the World Series. This is the annual championship between the winners of the two leagues, and this has been the major sporting event in Baseball since 1903, and attracts thousands of spectators and millions of viewers all over the world of the television broadcast.

Up to the last event in 2016, the World Series has been contested 112 times, with the American League winning 64 and the National League winning 47. The winner of the Baseball World Series championship is determined through a best-of-seven playoff, and the champion team is awarded the Commissioner’s Trophy. The World Series is played in October, the autumn season in North America, so the World Series is sometimes referred to as the Fall Classic.

Brought to America by Immigrants

Baseball has developed from the old bat and ball games that were being played in England from the mid 1800s. Immigrants to North America brought the various games with them, and the modern game of baseball developed from them. By the late nineteenth century, baseball was already widely known as the national sport of the USA. Baseball is now also played in parts of Central and South America, as well as the Caribbean and East Asia.

In the USA and Canada, the professional baseball teams belong either to the National League or the American League. Each of these leagues has three divisions, East, West and Central. The teams in each league play a series of knockout baseball to decide on the Winner of the Pennant. This is a long held tradition that the winners of each league is awarded a pennant to fly above their stadium. The two league winners then meet in the World Series, so called because the first sponsor of the games was the Daily World newspaper.
